"I was especially surprised at my younger daughter's performance on stage. She presented herself in a confident, prepared manner yet seemed quite natural to be in front of an audience. This was a great opportunity for children to explore theatre arts and form friendships outside their circles - Thank you Drama Club!"

THE TEEN PROGRAM

Teen Drama Program
Our program is uniquely suited to the teen years. We provide a safe environment where teens can explore and discover who they really are without fear of being judged or made fun of. They can focus their energies and emotions as part of a team dedicated to bringing together the skills and talents of everyone in the group. The skills they learn in our program will help them throughout their daily lives, in school, as well as in their communities. We help teens to be themselves, to share who they are with others and become part of a community, to learn about theatre, and have fun in the process!

This 28 week program runs during the school year with one class each week. For the first 4-5 weeks, participants will learn the basics of theatre through our specially developed games, activities, and performances. We will focus on skills in the five basic areas of drama: non-movement, movement, voice, characterization and improvisation. The students will then take these newly learned skills and skills they already have to produce a full-scale theatre production. They will be involved in every aspect of the show - from set design and construction, to costuming, sound and lighting, and of course performing on stage. Every person will have a significant role, and will be required to memorize lines and attend practices. The hard work will culminate in a high quality production that will be performed in a community theatre in the spring.

There will be two opportunities for students to perform - a showcase at the end of the fall session, and the full-scale production in the spring.

Frequently asked TEEN questions:

What if my teen has no drama experience, can they join?
YES! Our program will give your child a love of drama and the skills to act up with the best of them.

What about teens who do have drama experience. Will this program help them?
YES! Many children with drama experience come to us with the need to hone the skills necessary to become more effective on stage. However, the added value of understanding how their drama skills can be used in daily life benefits them greatly.

My daughter is afraid she will not fit in. She has had bad experiences with bullying and cruel treatment at school and it has affected her self-esteem. She is a great person, and would benefit from the confidence you offer, but I am having trouble getting her to take the step.
Tell your daughter that our classes become a place of refuge for many young people from the cynicism and destructiveness of some teen school cultures, which are based in fear. Ours is based in the freedom that comes from self-expression. We focus on building a good community in our classes and our teen members will tell you that some of their best friendships have been formed with people they met at drama class. As well, our instructors are young and dynamic and remember how hard high school can be; they can become great mentors and role models.

My son is very shy, hates public speaking, and would be embarrassed to speak in front of others. It is hard to imagine him performing before a large crowd. Does he have to perform in your program?
All of our programming is invitational. If participating in the fun games and activities is enough for him then that is a good place to start. These will help him to develop skills and confidence. However, if you read some of the testimonials from other parents you will see that we are very good at helping kids discover their love to be onstage and performing in front of others. We have had many experiences where a child begins the program not wanting to perform, but when show time arrives we could not keep them off the stage if we tried! It is the transformational power of drama.
